Jammertal cemetery

Almost 3 000 victims of various European nationalities lie buried in the so-called “foreigners’ cemetery” in Jammertal that was opened in 1943. They died of the effects of slave labour, concentration camp imprisonment and inhumane treatment. After the war, memorial columns were erected in remembrance of the different national groups of victims and to serve as a reminder of the crimes perpetrated by the Nazis. In the early seventies, commemorative name plaques set into the cemetery lawn were added.
Jammertal cemetery is one of the key memorial sites in Salzgitter.
